When a Death Occurs

Losing someone you love is one of life's hardest moments.
This page is here to help you with what to do next.
Our friendly team is here to offer support and guide you through making the funeral arrangements, taking it one step at a time.

What to do When a Death Occurs

A Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) will be issued either by your GP or from the Hospital/Hospice doctor who cared for your loved one. This is then countersigned by the Medical Examiner Service.  The MCCD gives information about the person who has died and what caused their death. The Medical Examiner will make contact with you to discuss the cause of death, explain anything you don’t understand and listen to any concerns you may have.  The Medical Examiner Service will then send a copy of the MCCD directly to the Registration Service who should contact you to make an appointment to register. You no longer need to collect any paperwork – it is all sent electronically to the registrar in the district where the person died.

You do not need to wait until the MCCD has been issued before you contact us, you can do this as soon as the death has occurred and we will be able to help and advise you as to what happens next.

If the death occurs in a hospital

If the death of your loved one occurs in a hospital the doctors will issue a MCCD. This can take a day or two as the certifying doctor may need to find out more information as to why someone has died.

If the doctor needs to understand more about why a person has died, he may ask for a Post Mortem to be carried out.

If the death occurs at home

If the death of your loved one occurs at home you should contact their GP or Palliative Care Nurse to verify the death and to confirm that it is OK for the funeral director to convey your loved one to the funeral home. We can be contacted 24/7 if you need us.

If the death occurs in a nursing home

If the death occurs in a nursing home or care home a member of staff will contact us on your behalf.

If the death is sudden or unexplained

If the death is sudden or unexplained the Doctor, Registrar or Police will report the death to the Coroners Office who will decide whether or not to investigate the death and whether a Post Mortem is required. If this is the case the necessary paperwork will be issued by the Coroners Office and emailed to the Registration Service.  The Coroners Office will notify us when your loved one can be brought back to our chapel of rest.
